There is a lot of pressure on pregnant women because it is a matter of statistics

Tamara, a 27-year-old woman, resident in Havana. Housewife.

Can you describe your state of health?

 

I am 36.2 weeks pregnant, I do not suffer from any chronic disease, althoughAfter 20 weeks of gestation I began to have low weight problems and mild anemia . 

How long have you been presenting this status?

 

When I was screened at the beginning of the pregnancy by the family doctor's office, I was classified as nomo-weight, however, due to my physical condition, thin, small, the doctor warned me that I had to be very careful with my diet, since I was at limit and in the slightest carelessness it could become underweight.  During the first and second trimester of pregnancy I could barely tolerate food and that influenced my condition to worsen.They sent me a food supplement that they sell in pharmacies Materlax, it is a mixture between the soy yogurt from the winery, in powder form, and the cerelax that they gave before, total that was trying it to run out and vomit. Then it went missing, along with prenatals and ferrous fumarate. 

Has your condition been enhanced or aggravated by eating conditions? Can you describe to us in what way or way?

During pregnancy it is important to have a balanced diet, although they never explained to me the proper way to do it.In the interdisciplinary consultations at the time of recruitment are a mere formality, the nutritionist evaluated my condition, but without much detail and specificity.Since then I try to consume fruits, vegetables, dairy products and a variety of meats. LLately it has been very difficult to acquire any of these products, everything is extremely expensive and scarce, at first I could buy yogurt, but suddenly the government raised the 4-liter tank of yogurt from 4 to 12 MLC.It turns out that this is a probiotic and it is the only one that is sold. I do not have family help abroad, it is very difficult to access the bare minimum for good nutrition. The only meat that I eat is chicken, practically, the beef that they give per diet is of very poor quality, and very little.  Thus it is impossible to maintain a proper hemoglobin, especially in the last trimester, which is when the fetus demands the most. And the weight too, basically the only thing there is to kill hunger is bread, or derivatives of flour, which are prohibited to avoid hypertension at the time of delivery, also if I gain weight suddenly it is a problem and if not also. 

Do you need any specific food for your condition? Which?

Red meat, rich in iron and vitamins, fruits, milk. During pregnancy, a good diet is essential for the development of the baby and the mother, and here we are getting worse and worse. 

Does this food represent an additional expense in your food costs? What alternative ways or channels do you use to “solve” it?

Yes, everything necessary for my diet must be acquired in the informal market, what they give me for my diet is not enough, nor is it of good quality.

Does this diet need additional exercises in its preparation that you could describe?

Well, I must consume little sugar, low salt, because of the vomiting sometimes I have to eat practically boiled food with no seasoning. I must not consume carbohydrates, abundant vegetables fruits.

What regulated foods (from the notebook) do you receive to cover the needs of your condition? 

Powdered milk (intermittently) does not arrive some months, chicken, in theory it should receive other things, but it never comes. 

Do you consider that you have access to what is necessary to cover a balanced diet according to the needs of your condition? Failing that, what products do you consider essential for your diet and are difficult for you to acquire?

No, I don't have access to everything I need.Fruits are essential and I can't always buy the amount and variety I need, milk is not enough, vegetables and meats. 

Do you suffer from anxiety or concern about the food supply necessary for your health? 

Yes, it is very worrying because all the time I live under the threat of being admitted to a maternity home, that in addition to the difficulties of the places, which are the best, means separating from my husband and my 2-year-old daughter, it is very strong the anguish of having to look for everything I need to eat because if they don't admit me. I know my baby is fine, but here there is a lot of pressure from the PAMI (maternal and child care program) on family doctors and they on us, because it's all a matter of statistics. 

Have you limited the quality or quantity of food for the benefit of another family member, in your opinion, more vulnerable? 

Sometimes, but almost always they are the ones who stop eating so that I eat better.
