uring the days following the passage of Hurricane Ian,
An unprecedented food crisis has been experienced in the city of Cienfuegos, at least in the last two decades. Chronic shortages and irregularities in the supply chain, which had already been taking a heavy toll on the population, especially the most vulnerable cases, such as the elderly, pregnant women, single mothers, the disabled and social cases, have reached their peak. critical in the midst of a delicate energy situation that has put additional pressure on Cienfuegos families.
During the last days of September, we toured the most important food sales establishments in the city, reaching 9 communities, of which only 2 were offering scarce products to the population. Most of the establishments in national currency are closed or completely out of stock.
The few that remain providing services such as the “La Yarda” market, located in the center of the city, are controlled by the presence of MININT agents and the National Revolutionary Police. What is sold in this market (one of the most important in the city) is: crackers, lemon concentrate and guava candy bar. With a limited number of units of these products, "shifts" are given since they are not enough to satisfy the demand. The lines take up to 24 hours and more to purchase any merchandise.
There are currently no meat products or protein sources for sale to the population for several days. With the price of the US dollar close to 200 Cuban pesos today and the carton of eggs at 900 pesos, the families that do not have MLC, which are the majority, have no way to acquire sources of animal protein in the state supply network. What is currently being sold in MLC stores are 500 gram mincemeat tubes at more than 4 MLC per unit.
After more than 72 hours without electricity, most of the families' food reserves were lost and the government has not yet drawn up a strategy to assist the most vulnerable families or restore stable supply. Faced with the demands of the population, the government response has been none other than reinforcing control and propaganda. Internet cuts continue to avoid visualizing the reality of the country and the protests that took place in the City of Havana. The situation does not improve.
